Canticle of Jeremiah (7:2-7)

The canticle set out below is the third of those used for Matins in the Common for the Dedication of a Church.

Canticum Ieremiae (7:2-7)
‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Juda who enter these gates to worship the Lord!
Hæc dicit Dóminus exercítuum * Deus Israël:
Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:
Bonas fácite vias vestras et stúdia vestra: * et habitábo vobíscum in loco isto.
Reform your ways and your deeds, so that I may remain with you in this place.
Nolíte confídere in verbis mendácii, dicéntes: * Templum Dómini, templum Dómini, templum Dómini est.
Put not your trust in the deceitful words: This is the temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord!
Only if you thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds;
If each of you deals justly with his neighbor; if you no longer oppress the resident alien, the orphan, and the widow;
If you no longer shed innocent blood in this place, or follow strange gods to your own harm,
Habitábo vobíscum in loco isto: * in terra, quam dedi patribus vestris a sǽculo et usque in sǽculum.
Will I remain with you in this place, in the land which I gave your fathers long ago and forever.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Office canticles: Isaiah 2

The second canticle for the dedication of a church is from Isaiah 2:2-3.

Canticum Isaiae
Et erit in novíssimis diebus: præparátus mons domus Dómini *in vértice móntium,
And in the last days the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be prepared on the top of mountains,
And it shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it.
Et ibunt pópuli multi, et dicent: * Veníte, et ascendámus ad montem Dómini, et ad domum Dei Iacob;
And many people shall go, and say: Come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob,
And he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths:
Quia de Sion exíbit lex, * et verbum Dómini de Ierúsalem.
For the law shall come forth from Sion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
Amen.

Office canticles: Tobit 13: 10 - 17

The Canticle of Tobit set out below is used as the first of the third nocturn canticles in the Common of the Dedication of a Church.

Canticum Tobiae (13:10-17)
Bless ye the Lord, all his elect, keep days of joy, and give glory to him.
Ierúsalem, cívitas Dei, *castigávit te Dóminus in opéribus mánuum tuárum.
Jerusalem, city of God, the Lord hath chastised thee for the works of thy hands.
Confitére Dómino in bonis tuis *et bénedic Deum sæculórum; ut reædíficet in te tabernáculum suum,
Give glory to the Lord for thy good things, and bless the God eternal, that he may rebuild his tabernacle in thee,
and may call back all the captives to thee, and thou mayst rejoice for ever and ever.
Thou shalt shine with a glorious light: and all the ends of the earth shall worship thee.
Nations from afar shall come to thee: and shall bring gifts, and shall adore the Lord in thee.
And they shall esteem thy land as holy. For they shall call upon the great name in thee.
They shall be cursed that shall despise thee: and they shall be condemned that shall blaspheme thee: and blessed shall they be that shall build thee up.
But thou shalt rejoice in thy children, because they shall all be blessed, and shall be gathered together to the Lord.
Amen.
