Office canticles: Isaiah 62:4-7

The third canticle used for female saints, including Our Lady, is set out below.

Canticum Isaiae (62: 4-7)

Non vocáberis ultra Derelícta, * et terra tua non vocábitur ámplius Desoláta:
Thou shalt no more be called Forsaken: and thy land shall no more be called Desolate:
Sed vocáberis, Volúntas mea in ea, * et terra tua inhabitáta:
But thou shalt be called My pleasure in her, and thy land inhabited.
Quia complácuit Dómino in te: * et terra tua inhabitábitur.
Because the Lord hath been well pleased with thee: and thy land shall be inhabited.
Habitábit enim iúvenis cum vírgine, *et habitábunt in te fílii tui:
For the young man shall dwell with the virgin, and thy children shall dwell in thee.
Et gaudébit sponsus super sponsam, * et gaudébit super te Deus tuus.
And the bridegroom shall rejoice over the bride, and thy God shall rejoice over thee.
Super muros tuos, Ierúsalem, constítui custódes; * tota die et tota nocte in perpétuum non tacébunt.
Upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen all the day, and all the night, they shall never hold their peace.
Qui reminiscímini Dómini, ne taceátis, † et ne detis siléntium ei, * donec stabíliat et donec ponat Ierúsalem laudem in terra.
You that are mindful of the Lord, hold not your peace, and give him no silence till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.

Office canticles: Isaiah 61-2

The second canticle used for feasts of Our Lady and other female saints is from Isaiah.

Canticum Isaiae (61:10-11; 62:1-3)

Gaudens gaudébo in Dómino, * et exsultábit ánima mea in Deo meo:
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, and my soul shall be joyful in my God:
Quia índuit me vestiméntis salútis, *et induménto iustítiæ circúmdedit me,
For he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation: and with the robe of justice he hath covered me,
Quasi sponsum decorátum coróna, * et quasi sponsam ornátam monílibus suis.
As a bridegroom decked with a crown, and as a bride adorned with her jewels.
Sicut enim terra profert germen suum, † et sicut hortus semen suum gérminat, * sic Dóminus Deus germinábit iustítiam et laudem coram univérsis géntibus.
For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth her seed to shoot forth: so shall the Lord God make justice to spring forth, and praise before all the nations.
Propter Sion non tacébo, et propter Ierúsalem non quiéscam, † donec egrediátur ut splendor iustus eius, * et salvátor eius ut lampas accendátur.
For Sion’s sake I will not hold my peace, and for the sake of Jerusalem, I will not rest till her just one come forth as brightness, and her saviour be lighted as a lamp.
Et vidébunt gentes iustum tuum, * et cuncti reges ínclitum tuum;
And the Gentiles shall see thy just one, and all kings thy glorious one:
Et vocábitur tibi nomen novum, * quod os Dómini nominábit.
And thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.
Et eris coróna glóriæ in manu Dómini, et diadéma regni in manu Dei tui.
And thou shalt be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

Canticle of Anna


The Canticle of Anna, from 1 Samuel (I Kings) 2, is usually said on Wednesdays at Lauds in the Benedictine office,  but it is also used, arranged as below, as the second and third canticles for the feast of Christ the King.  


Canticum Annae 1 Reg 2: 1-5

Exsultávit cor meum in Dómino, * et exaltátum est cornu meum in Deo meo.
My heart hath rejoiced in the Lord, * and my horn is exalted in my God:
Dilatátum est os meum super inimícos meos: * quia lætáta sum in salutári tuo.
My mouth is enlarged over my enemies: * because I have joyed in thy salvation.
Non est sanctus, ut est Dóminus: † neque enim est álius extra te, * et non est fortis sicut Deus noster.
There is none holy as the Lord is: for there is no other beside thee, * and there is none strong like our God.
Nolíte multiplicáre loqui sublímia, * gloriántes:
Do not multiply to speak lofty things, * boasting:
Recédant vétera de ore vestro: † quia Deus scientiárum, Dóminus est, * et ipsi præparántur cogitatiónes.
Let old matters depart from your mouth: for the Lord is a God of all knowledge, * and to him are thoughts prepared.
Arcus fórtium superátus est, * et infírmi accíncti sunt róbore.
The bow of the mighty is overcome, * and the weak are girt with strength.
Repléti prius, pro pánibus se locavérunt: * et famélici saturáti sunt.
They that were full before have hired out themselves for bread: * and the hungry are filled,
Donec stérilis péperit plúrimos: * et quæ multos habébat fílios, infirmáta est.
So that the barren hath borne many: * and she that had many children is weakened.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

Dóminus mortíficat et vivíficat, * dedúcit ad ínferos et redúcit.
The Lord killeth and maketh alive, * he bringeth down to hell and bringeth back again.

The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich, * he humbleth and he exalteth.
Súscitat de púlvere egénum, * et de stércore élevat páuperem:
He raiseth up the needy from the dust, * and lifteth up the poor from the dunghill:
Ut sédeat cum princípibus, * et sólium glóriæ téneat.
That he may sit with princes, * and hold the throne of glory.
Dómini enim sunt cárdines terræ, * et pósuit super eos orbem.
For the poles of the earth are the Lord’s, * and upon them he hath set the world.
Pedes sanctórum suórum servábit, † et ímpii in ténebris conticéscent: * quia non in fortitúdine sua roborábitur vir.
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness, * because no man shall prevail by his own strength.
Dóminum formidábunt adversárii eius: * et super ipsos in cælis tonábit:
The adversaries of the Lord shall fear him: * and upon them shall he thunder in the heavens.
Dóminus iudicábit fines terræ, † et dabit impérium regi suo, * et sublimábit cornu Christi sui.
The Lord shall judge the ends of the earth, and he shall give empire to his king, * and shall exalt the horn of his Christ.

Office canticles: Ecclesiasticus 31

The canticle below is the third in the Common of Confessors.


Canticum Ecclesiastici (31:8-11)
Beátus vir, qui invéntus est sine mácula,† et qui post aurum non ábiit,* nec sperávit in pecúnia et thesáuris.
Blessed is the man that is found without blemish: and that hath not gone after gold, * nor put his trust in money nor in treasures.
Quis est hic, et laudábimus eum? * fecit enim mirabília in vita sua.
Who is he, and we will praise him? * for he hath done wonderful things in his life.
Qui probátus est in illo, et perféctus est, * erit illi glória ætérna:
Who hath been tried thereby, and made perfect, * he shall have glory everlasting.
Qui pótuit tránsgredi, et non est transgréssus; * fácere mala, et non fecit.
He that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed: * and could do evil things, and hath not done them.
Ideo stabilíta sunt bona illíus in Dómino, * et eleemósynas illíus enarrábit omnis ecclésia sanctórum.
Therefore are his goods established in the Lord, * and all the church of the saints shall declare his alms.

Office canticles: Jeremiah 17


The second canticle for the Common of confessors is from Jeremiah, and has strong echoes of Psalm 1:

Canticum Ieremiae (17:7-8)
Benedíctus vir qui confídit in Dómino, * et erit Dóminus fidúcia eius.
Blessed be the man that trusteth in the Lord, * and the Lord shall be his confidence.

Et erit quasi lignum quod transplantátur super aquas, † quod ad humórem mittit radíces suas, * et non timébit cum vénerit æstus.
And he shall be as a tree that is planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots towards moisture: * and it shall not fear when the heat cometh.

Et erit fólium eius víride, † et in témpore siccitátis non erit sollícitum,* nec aliquándo désinet fácere fructum.
And the leaf thereof shall be green, and in the time of drought it shall not be solicitous, * neither shall it cease at any time to bring forth fruit.

Office canticles: Ecclesiasticus 14

The following canticle is the first of those used in the common of confessors.


Canticum Ecclesiastici (14:22; 15:3-4, 6)

Beátus vir qui in sapiéntia morábitur, † et qui in iustítia sua meditábitur,* et in sensu cogitábit circumspectiónem Dei.
Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, * and in his mind shall think of the all-seeing eye of God.
Cibábit illum pane vitæ et intelléctus, * et aqua sapiéntiæ salutáris potábit illum:
With the bread of life and understanding, * she shall feed him, and give him the water of wholesome wisdom to drink.
Et firmábitur in illo, et non flectétur: † et continébit illum, et non confundétur: * et exaltábit illum apud próximos suos.
And she shall be made strong in him, and he shall not be moved: And she shall hold him fast, and he shall not be confounded: * and she shall exalt him among his neighbours.
Et nómine ætérno hæreditábit illum * Dóminus Deus noster.
And shall cause him to inherit an everlasting name * the Lord our God.

Canticle of Jeremiah (7:2-7)

The canticle set out below is the third of those used for Matins in the Common for the Dedication of a Church.

Canticum Ieremiae (7:2-7)
Audíte verbum Dómini, omnis Iuda, * qui ingredímini per portas has, ut adorétis Dóminum.
‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Juda who enter these gates to worship the Lord!
Hæc dicit Dóminus exercítuum * Deus Israël:
Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:
Bonas fácite vias vestras et stúdia vestra: * et habitábo vobíscum in loco isto.
Reform your ways and your deeds, so that I may remain with you in this place.
Nolíte confídere in verbis mendácii, dicéntes: * Templum Dómini, templum Dómini, templum Dómini est.
Put not your trust in the deceitful words: This is the temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord!
Quóniam si bene direxéritis vias vestras, * et stúdia vestra:
Only if you thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds;
Si fecéritis iudícium inter virum et próximum eius, * ádvenæ et pupíllo et víduæ non fecéritis calúmniam,
If each of you deals justly with his neighbor; if you no longer oppress the resident alien, the orphan, and the widow;
Nec sánguinem innocéntem effudéritis in loco hoc * et post deos aliénos non ambulavéritis in malum vobismetípsis:
If you no longer shed innocent blood in this place, or follow strange gods to your own harm,
Habitábo vobíscum in loco isto: * in terra, quam dedi patribus vestris a sǽculo et usque in sǽculum.
Will I remain with you in this place, in the land which I gave your fathers long ago and forever.
